Members of the United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps will appear in concert in the Arne B. Larson Concert Hall at the National Music Museum (located on the campus of the University of South Dakota) at 7:30 p.m. on Lincoln’s birthday, Sunday, Feb. 12. The eight-member unit of this elite Corps will perform on instruments inspired by those used during the 18th century, including fifes and drums, Baroque trumpets, and Baroque flutes. As with many aspects of life in the Colonies, musical traditions were influenced by European practices. These included the use of natural trumpets for civic celebrations, religious events and military drills.
To see this unit perform is to experience history come to life – a proud history that began with the musicians of the Continental Army and continues to this day. For more information, contact Margaret Downie Banks, Interim Director, National Music Museum, (605) 677-5306.
